Since launching in 2005, YouTube has held a monopoly over online videos. A new challenger has recently come to light, Instagram TV (IGTV). Does it stand a chance of ending YouTube’s reign or will it join the likes of Snapchat, Periscope, Vimeo, and Facebook Video in the list of those that tried and failed?
The current iteration of IGTV still has much to be desired. After all, it’s still in its first rollout. Here are its primary shortcomings:
- The search option does not support keywords or hashtags so users can only search for channel names.
- There are no ads on the app so creators cannot use the platform as a source of income.
Despite these shortcomings, many believe in the potential of IGTV. Keep in mind, Instagram had a rough start too when it first tried to close Snapchat’s key features. Things paid off in the end, however, as Instagram has now beat Snapchat in the latter’s own game. We will see IGTV’s full potential within the next few years.
